Jurgen Declerck
Paintings - Installations - Photography
More…
Faced with artworks by Jurgen Declerck, several facets immediately stand out. These include the striking variation in style and the wide variety of media and materials used. Painting, photography and installations form the basis of his creative universe.
If we take a closer look at Declerck as a person, we discover that this visible restlessness runs completely parallel to his incessant questioning and searching in his own emotional and critical mind.
Eventually, each question receives an appropriate answer, which is then translated into a rational work, a reference material or a legible figuration.
Dosing these artistic solutions with each other leads to the seemingly completely separate works eventually coming together in a meaningful symbiosis.
Declerck paints mainly with acrylic paint, which allows him to quickly superimpose several layers of paint, a necessity given the speed at which he works.
Whereas in his photographs people remain in the background, in his paintings they take a predominant place.
In his early work strongly influenced by the expressionism of the Neue Wilde, Declerck evolved into a rather subdued and reflective contemplation of the world around him, guided by his emotions of the moment - not always obvious to an outsider.
